The CARES ACT is federal legislation that was passed by the United States Congress in March 2020. It provides financial support to individuals and businesses affected by the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) pandemic. Mountain Empire Community College will receive $1,394,924 from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) created as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES ACT). MECC has signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to the U.S. Department of Education. MECC will use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004 (a) (1) of the CARES ACT to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.

Mountain Empire Community College provides distance learning opportunities for its students who are unable to attend classes on the college campus or who prefer the online learning environment. The distance learning opportunities at MECC meet all quality standards set forth for traditional on-campus programs to carry out the mission of the College and to support the initiatives of the Virginia Community College System (VCCS).

Institutional effectiveness is defined at Mountain Empire Community College as the accomplishment of the College’s mission through the achievement of  stated outcomes, goals, and objectives. MECC uses a variety of  evaluation and assessment processes to determine the degree to which it accomplishes its mission.  The College’s Department of Institutional Effectiveness works with campus stakeholders in order to engage in comprehensive planning, data-driven decision making, and continuous improvement.

Job Market and Salary Information


As a recipient of federal funds, Mountain Empire Community College is required to comply with Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972, 20 U.S.C. § 1681 et seq. (“Title IX”), which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs or activities, admission and employment.
