Mountain Empire Community College’s Wampler Library to Host Award-Winning Author Lynn Sutter
Big Stone Gap, VA – Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) is excited to announce a special reception featuring award-winning author Lynn Sutter at the Wampler Library on Friday, September 13 at 2 p.m. Sutter, known for her captivating work on the history of baseball in coal camps, will share insights from her research in New Mexico and Southwest Virginia. Her talk will feature historic photographs that bring to life the rich recreational history of these communities.
As part of the event, the Southwest Virginia Museum will also showcase an exhibit that highlights the region’s history of recreation, underscoring the significant role sports have played in shaping community life. In addition, the Wampler Library will host a stunning Broken Star Quilt by local artisan Evelyn Hoskins. This intricately crafted quilt, completed in August 2022, is a vibrant reflection of Hoskins’ friendship with fellow quilter Lottie Robinette and the many stories they shared together.
Refreshments will be served during the reception. This event is free and open to the public, making it a great opportunity for the community to learn more about local history, art, and culture.
