MECC Organizes Disaster Relief Drive for Hurricane Helene Victims

Big Stone Gap, VA – In response to the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) is launching a Disaster Relief Drive to support the affected communities in Unico County, Tennessee. The drive will take place from October 9 through October 21, and we are calling upon the generosity and community spirit of our MECC community family members to assist in this critical effort.

 Many families have been displaced, including some from our own MECC community, and they are in urgent need of essential supplies. We are seeking donations of the following items:

  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Trash bags
  • Medical gloves
  • Work gloves
  • Personal hygiene items (deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash)
  • Hand soap
  • Band-Aids
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Wet wipes
  • Charcoal
  • Small propane tanks
  • Gas cans
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Candles
  • Tylenol and ibuprofen (unopened and in-date)
  • Ziploc bags
  • Dog and cat food
  • Cat litter
  • Shovels
  • Rakes
  • Hand tools

 

Donation Drop-off Locations:

  • Student Services
  • Health Sciences Division Suite
  • CWIA Main Office

 

All donations will be sent directly to those in need in the Unico County area.


Home Craft Days Concert

Attendees of the Friday night Home Craft Days concert on Friday October 18th at 6:30 can bring items for the disaster relief drive to the Goodloe Center. Your contributions at this event will significantly aid those affected by the hurricane.

Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to contributing supplies, there are also opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers will assist with distributing supplies, helping with cleanup efforts, and providing support in the hardest-hit areas across Northeast Tennessee. All volunteer efforts are being coordinated by the United Way of Northeast TN and Bristol, VA.
